Newsletter #14 - Check-in, Volunteering and More Fun!

Hello fellow unicyclists,

Registration being closed can only mean one thing: that Unicon is right around the corner. Today is exactly one month before the start of the first competitions! Getting excited now? Let’s go for some reminders and important information.

REMINDERS

Do you need a Visa to enter Canada? Here is an important website to visit to ensure that you have the right papers to enter the country.

For people lodging at Collège de Maisonneuve, you could check this list of nearby laundromats. 11 days of intense competitions will probably convince you to do so anyway... or a fellow roommate will do if not!

REGISTRATION AND CHECK-IN AT UNICON

If you are not registered for Unicon and still wish to do so, you will be able to register at the cost of $370 CAD for Competitor and $125 CAD for Non-Competitor. This will allow you to have access to all workshops and practice gymnasiums. Riders who are already registered will NOT be able to add events to their registration but can delete them if they wish to.

You will be able to check-in at anytime during the convention, but we invite you all on the 29th and 30th of July for two days of check-in at the Collège de Maisonneuve before the official opening ceremony. You will only need a valid ID (passport or similar) to identify yourself, and for participants under the age of 18, our waiver signed by your legal guardian which will be sent out to you soon.

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering is key to the success of any Unicon. In fact, without the required numbers of volunteers, some competitions in Muni and Distance cannot happen because of security requirements for road closure and such. This is why we kindly ask you and your family members to consider volunteering for one or two events on days where you don’t have any competitions. With everyone’s help we can ensure to make Unicon a great event.

If you are interested, please have a look at this Google Spreadsheet. To show your interest, simply add your name beside any task you would happily do. If you are aware of a friend or family member who is not registered for Unicon but could be interested in volunteering at the convention, make sure to share this document so they can add their name. Although writing your name is committing to volunteering for these events, we still require you to check-in at the Volunteering table at the onsite registration. Please note that food (snacks or lunch) will be provided for timeslots of volunteering of 5+ hours or during lunch time. You will receive more details on the registration days.

WORKSHOPS

As you all know, Unicons are way more than just competitions. They are a gathering of unicycle enthusiasts who want to exchange with others about their love of the sport. Therefore, in addition to the official Explore-Montréal workshops, we invite you to add workshops YOU are willing to organize and host! It can be anything, tutorials about tricks, spontaneous rides in Montréal in tight pants, Tuva throat singing or even a nap time workshop or a water fight armageddon. Let your crazy inner personality shine!

Just login to Lanyrd, create a workshop with a description, a start and an end time and choose an available location for it. You are then all set to start sending invitations and let people know about your activity!

We have two great Workshop Directors who will be excited to meet you during the first few days of Unicon to make sure your venue is confirmed for your workshop, so don’t leave the check-in without having a chat with them at the Workshops table!

UNICON 17 MOBILE APP

Yes, you read correctly: an iOS app for Unicon 17 is currently in development to let you check schedules, venues, restaurants, activities and even results! A first time in the history of Unicons! Thanks to our friend Yohann Jouanneau, the app will be ready some time before the beginning of the event. We will let you know on our Facebook page and Twitter account, so don’t forget to follow either (or both) of these platforms as they will be a great source of last minute information during Unicon too.

Next stop will be a sneak peek at the medals, trophies and t-shirts you will all be proudly wearing and lifting high up in the air!

Ride on,

The Unicon 17 Organization Team
